Hardware-driven UK techno at genuinely punishing volume — the live rig is the whole point, wrangling machines into some of the genre's most physical sound.

Blawan is the stage name of Jamie Roberts, a producer from Barnsley in South Yorkshire; the name comes from Java Blawan, a coffee he drank often while at university. He first drew attention around 2010 with a debut release, Fram, on Hessle Audio, before signing to R&S Records, and his early tracks sat between UK bass music and techno.

Two tracks did most to build his name: 'Why They Hide Their Bodies Under My Garage?' and a remix of Radiohead's 'Bloom' that appeared on the band's 2011 remix album TKOL RMX 1234567. His sound moved steadily toward stripped, percussive industrial techno, often built from heavily processed drum machines and distorted vocal fragments.

He is regarded as one of the artists who drove the industrial techno revival, and has drawn praise from established techno figures including Surgeon and The Black Dog. He also records as half of Karenn with fellow R&S producer Pariah, a project built around live hardware jams, and the two run the Voam label together.

Blawan's own performances are typically hardware sets rather than DJ sets, with machines patched and manipulated in real time, giving the material a rougher, less fixed shape than the records. His catalogue since has included the albums Wet Will Always Dry (2018) and SickElixir (2025).
