Camping in Alaska formed in Huntsville, Alabama, getting its start in a guitarist's mother's garage in 2012. The band went on to become one of the more widely traded names in the mid-2010s wave of Midwest-emo revival groups, most of which circulated through Bandcamp and online message boards rather than radio or major labels.

Their songs pair bright, tapped and fingerpicked guitar lines with abrupt shifts in tempo and dynamics, and vocals that move between a spoken-sounding delivery and full screams, sometimes within the same verse. That contrast has made the band a reference point for listeners tracking the genre's more intricate, emotionally maximal end.

Lyrically the band works in the confessional, self-questioning register common to the style, and the recordings keep a deliberately unpolished, close-miked feel, closer to a practice-space tape than a studio product. After years of relative quiet, Camping in Alaska has said a new album is due out in late 2026.
