Songwriter, producer, and filmmaker whose bedroom-born songs veer cinematic and strange — DIY punk roots refracted through digital experimentation, texture-first and quietly fearless.

Frances Chang was born in Chicago and raised in New York, where she still records largely on her own. Mostly self-taught as a musician, she built her practice through bedroom recordings, with early exposure to DIY punk, emo and post-hardcore scenes shaping her sense of what a live show could sound like.

Her songs move between lo-fi indie pop, psychedelic textures and abrupt, guitar-driven passages, prioritising atmosphere and sound design alongside melody. Vocals often sit low in the mix, and structures shift rather than repeat, carrying the rough edges of her punk background even as the arrangements take unexpected turns.

Chang works across disciplines beyond music, scoring film and making video work, and her recordings carry a similarly visual, scene-by-scene pacing. She has also pursued interdisciplinary projects like ORACLE, a found poetry piece drawing on her study of the I Ching, reflecting a longstanding interest in the relationship between digital and physical realms.

Her third album, been thinking bout confession, is her most ambitious and personal work to date, pairing unusually diaphanous vocals with instrumentation that swings between frenetic and oceanic. Alongside her solo output, she is one half of Die Artist, an experimental ambient duo.
