The blueprint for women fronting a rock band on their own terms, still playing it with total conviction — 'Bad Reputation' as mission statement.
Joan Jett formed the Blackhearts after the breakup of the Runaways, the Los Angeles teenage rock band in which she played guitar. Turned down by numerous labels, she and producer Kenny Laguna issued her first solo record themselves before founding Blackheart Records, one of the earliest independent labels run by a woman in rock. The band's version of "I Love Rock 'n' Roll" became a defining hit, and songs such as "Bad Reputation," "Crimson and Clover" and "I Hate Myself for Loving You" remain fixtures of the set.
The sound is direct: short songs, distorted guitar chords, and Jett's flat, unsentimental vocal delivery. She was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame with the Blackhearts in 2015.
