Nick Lowe
English songwriter and producer behind much of the late-'70s power-pop and new-wave canon — sharp melodic craft, delivered with a straight face and a dry joke underneath.
Nick Lowe, born in 1949, came up through the pub-rock band Brinsley Schwarz before becoming a central figure at Stiff Records, where he was both a recording artist and the label's in-house producer. He produced the first four Elvis Costello albums and the Damned's debut, and wrote "(What's So Funny 'Bout) Peace, Love and Understanding," a song Costello's version later carried around the world. Under his own name he had hits with "Cruel to Be Kind" and led Rockpile alongside Dave Edmunds.
From the 1990s onward Lowe shifted toward a quieter, more crooned style — spare arrangements, country and soul inflections, and songs about ageing and regret delivered with the same understated wit. In recent years he has toured and recorded with the instrumental group Los Straitjackets.
