Manchester's self-aware pop provocateurs — 80s gloss, terminally online lyrics, and a frontman who treats every show like performance art.
The 1975 trace back to 2002 at Wilmslow High School, when guitarist Adam Hann recruited Matty Healy to play drums in a band with bassist Ross MacDonald. When a planned singer dropped out, Healy took over vocals, later handing drumming duties to George Daniel. The four started out playing punk and emo covers before writing their own songs.
The band's name comes from a scrawled note, "1 June, The 1975", found inside a secondhand copy of Jack Kerouac's On the Road that Healy owned. After years playing under other names, they signed to independent label Dirty Hit in 2012 and released a run of EPs, Facedown, Sex, Music for Cars and IV, before their self-titled debut album in 2013.
Their music mixes glossy 1980s pop production, guitar rock and electronic and ambient interludes, with lyrics that circle around modern anxiety, fame and internet culture, and Healy's talkative, unpredictable stage presence remains a defining part of their live shows.
Each of their albums has topped the UK chart, and I Like It When You Sleep, for You Are So Beautiful yet So Unaware of It also reached number one in the US, Canada, Australia and New Zealand. A Brief Inquiry into Online Relationships won British Album of the Year at the 2019 Brit Awards, and its single "Give Yourself a Try" received a Grammy nomination. Over the years the band has collected four Brit Awards, two Ivor Novello Awards and two Mercury Prize nominations.
