The 1975
Manchester's self-aware pop provocateurs — 80s gloss, terminally online lyrics, and a frontman who treats every show like performance art.
The 1975 formed in Wilmslow, near Manchester, with a lineup of Matty Healy on vocals and guitar, Adam Hann on guitar, Ross MacDonald on bass and George Daniel on drums, all of whom met at school. After several years of EPs, their self-titled debut album arrived in 2013, followed by I Like It When You Sleep, for You Are So Beautiful yet So Unaware of It, A Brief Inquiry into Online Relationships, Notes on a Conditional Form and Being Funny in a Foreign Language. Their music mixes glossy 1980s pop production, guitar rock and electronic and ambient interludes, with lyrics that circle around modern anxiety, fame and internet culture. Healy's talkative, unpredictable stage presence is a defining part of their live shows.
