Heartthrob pop with indie manners — 'Sally, When the Wine Runs Out' made him a festival fixture, and the crowd brings the wine.

Role Model is Tucker Pillsbury, born in 1997 and raised in Cape Elizabeth, Maine, where his father worked as a real estate appraiser and his mother taught special education. As a child he was fixated on Elvis Presley, performing for family members dressed in costume, an early sign of the theatrical streak that would resurface later in his career.

He moved to Pittsburgh to study film at Point Park University, but a pair of wrist injuries, one skiing and one skateboarding, kept him confined to his dorm room. Friends had left recording equipment there, and he taught himself Logic Pro while recovering, eventually dropping out as music took over.

His first output came under the names Tucker and then Dillis, rapping and self-releasing a mixtape and an album before switching to singing in 2017 and renaming himself Role Model. He recorded the EP Arizona in the Summer in his closet; it circulated online widely enough that Mac Miller invited him to Los Angeles to work together, and Interscope signed him in 2018.

The EPs Oh, How Perfect (2019) and Our Little Angel (2020) followed, working in a guitar-inflected strain of pop that keeps close to bedroom-recording informality even as the production grew. His songs tend toward self-deprecating accounts of relationships, sung in a conversational register.

His debut album, Rx, arrived in 2022, followed by Kansas Anymore in 2024 and a third album, Chuck Timely & the Hourglass. The single "Sally, When the Wine Runs Out" brought him a much wider audience, and his live shows have become known for the audience participation that grew up around it.
