Samara Cyn
Technically sharp West Coast rapper who arrived fully formed and hasn't wasted a verse yet — the co-signs keep stacking.
Samara Cyn was born Samara Henderson in Murfreesboro, Tennessee, and moved often as a child, living in Augusta, Georgia, El Paso, Texas, Hawaii and Colorado as her father, in the army, was posted around the country, while her mother taught English. She began writing poetry in fifth grade at her mother's encouragement and was introduced to hip-hop by her father through Slick Rick's debut album.
She studied at Arizona State University, performing poetry at a weekly open mic called Poetic Soul, and graduated in 2021 with a degree in supply chain management. In her second year, with friends rapping around her one night, she rapped one of her own poems over a beat instead, and poetry turned into music. She later settled in Moreno Valley, in California's Inland Empire, and then Los Angeles.
Cyn works in a dense, conversational style, with long unbroken verses and internal rhyme schemes delivered over soul- and jazz-leaning production, and she handles much of her own writing and arrangement. Her songs tend toward first-person observation about class, family and ambition rather than club material, and she has been grouped with a generation of West Coast lyricists working outside radio formats.
She wrote her first song in 2019 and played her first live show that November, building attention through self-released singles and freestyle videos before opening for Teddy Swims in 2021 and Isaiah Rashad in 2024. Her debut EP, The Drive Home, followed in 2024 and drew public co-signs from Erykah Badu and Lauryn Hill, and that year she opened for Nas on his Illmatic anniversary tour.
In 2025 she won the Grulke Prize for Developing US Act at South by Southwest, supported Smino on his Kountry Kousins tour, and released the EP Backroads, later ranked among the year's best EPs by Spin and Hypebeast and among the best rap albums by Billboard. She was named to the XXL freshman class and made her late-night debut on The Daily Show. A further EP, Detour, arrived in 2026, followed by a short North American tour.
