The Chameleons
Cavernous, chiming post-punk that half of modern indie rock has quietly borrowed from — 'Script of the Bridge' the secret source text.
The Chameleons formed in Middleton, near Manchester, in 1981, built around Mark Burgess's declamatory vocals and bass and the interlocking, heavily delayed guitars of Reg Smithies and Dave Fielding. Their sound is spacious and reverberant, closer to the widescreen end of post-punk than to its sharper, more angular strain.
Their debut album, "Script of the Bridge," arrived in 1983 and remains the record most often cited by later admirers, followed by "What Does Anything Mean? Basically" and "Strange Times." The band split in the mid-1980s after the death of their manager, and have reunited in various configurations since. Their guitar textures have proved widely influential on subsequent indie and alternative rock.
