Spizz Energi
Owner of the first-ever UK indie chart number one, and a band that has changed its name a dozen times since.
Spizz Energi is one of several names used by the Birmingham singer Kenneth Spiers, known as Spizz, who began in the late 1970s and changed the band's title with almost every phase of its existence — among them Spizzoil, Athletico Spizz 80 and The Spizzles. The music sat between punk, new wave and early post-punk, marked by cheap keyboards, chanted vocals and a strong streak of humour.
The 1979 single "Where's Captain Kirk?", released on Rough Trade, became the first number one on the UK Indie Chart when it was launched at the start of 1980, and remains the band's best-known song alongside "Soldier Soldier".
