Belfast punk written under the Troubles — Jake Burns's sandpaper roar over songs about getting out, 'Alternative Ulster' still the loudest exit plan.
Stiff Little Fingers formed in Belfast in 1977, with Jake Burns on vocals and guitar. Their early material was written against the backdrop of the Troubles, and the debut album Inflammable Material — released through Rough Trade — set out their approach: fast, direct punk with lyrics about sectarian violence, boredom and the desire to leave. 'Alternative Ulster' and 'Suspect Device' remain their best-known songs.
Later records widened the sound toward power pop and more conventional rock arrangements. The band split in the early 1980s and reformed later in the decade, and have continued touring with Burns as the constant member.
