Penetration formed in 1976 in Ferryhill, County Durham, fronted by singer Pauline Murray. They were among the first punk bands to emerge from the north-east of England, and their early single "Don't Dictate" is still the song they are best known for.
Their material carried more melodic and harmonic detail than much first-wave punk, edging towards new wave, and Murray's voice gave the songs an unusual clarity. The band split at the end of the 1970s, after which Murray recorded with Pauline Murray and the Invisible Girls, and later reformed to record and perform again.
