The Godfathers
Sharp-suited, hard-driving rock'n'roll with punk's aggression and none of its scruffiness — 'Birth, School, Work, Death' still the résumé.
The Godfathers formed in London in the mid-1980s around brothers Peter and Chris Coyne, following the end of their earlier band The Sid Presley Experience. They played a hard, direct form of rock and roll that drew on the Who and the Stooges as much as on punk, and they performed in suits, a deliberate contrast to the scruffiness of their contemporaries.
"Birth, School, Work, Death" remains their best-known song, and the album of the same name gave them their widest exposure in Britain and the United States. Peter Coyne has continued to lead the band through various lineups.
