Matt Heafy's Florida four-piece has quietly become one of metal's most technically reliable live bands — 'Ascendancy' to now, no off nights.

Trivium formed in Orlando, Florida, in 2000, built around guitarist and vocalist Matt Heafy, guitarist Corey Beaulieu and bassist Paolo Gregoletto. The band's early lineup released a debut album, Ember to Inferno, through the German label Lifeforce in 2003, before Roadrunner Records signed them and became their home label from 2004 onward.

Their 2005 album Ascendancy remains the record most associated with them, recorded at Audiohammer Studios and Morrisound Recording and produced by Heafy alongside Jason Suecof. It combines thrash-derived riffing and twin-guitar harmonies with metalcore structures, mixing clean and screamed vocals, and it introduced the band to a much wider audience than their debut had reached.

Across the albums that followed, Trivium moved between heavier, more technical writing and more melodic material while keeping a consistently high standard of musicianship. The band has released ten studio albums in total, has sold more than a million records worldwide, and picked up a Grammy nomination for the song "Betrayer" in 2019.

They have toured steadily since the mid-2000s and built a reputation as a dependable live act, with Heafy handling the majority of lead vocals and the guitar interplay between him and Beaulieu staying tight even at speed. The rhythm section behind them has changed several times over the years, with drummer Alex Rüdinger the most recent addition to the group.
