Rob Thomas's hit factory — '3AM' to 'Unwell,' the sound of every late-'90s radio dial, played by a band tighter than the nostalgia requires.
Matchbox Twenty grew out of Tabitha's Secret, an Orlando group formed by Rob Thomas, Brian Yale and Paul Doucette. After adding guitarists Adam Gaynor and Kyle Cook, the band signed to Atlantic Records and became Matchbox Twenty in 1996. Gaynor left in 2004, prompting the band's first hiatus; when they regrouped in 2007, Doucette moved to rhythm guitar, leaving Thomas, Yale, Doucette and Cook as the lineup that has remained since.
Their debut, Yourself or Someone Like You, sold heavily on the strength of singles including "Push", "3AM" and "Real World", placing the band at the centre of late-1990s American pop rock and post-grunge radio. The album eventually shipped more than twelve million copies in the United States, earning diamond certification.
Mad Season and More Than You Think You Are followed, with "Bent" and "Unwell" among the best-known tracks; Mad Season reached the Top 3 of the Billboard 200 and went four-times platinum, while More Than You Think You Are was certified double platinum.
Thomas has also had a substantial solo career, notably his vocal on Santana's "Smooth", a song he co-wrote with Itaal Shur for Santana's comeback album Supernatural. The track won three Grammy Awards, including Record of the Year and Song of the Year.
The band has reunited periodically for touring and new material: a compilation, Exile on Mainstream, appeared in 2007, North reached No. 1 on the Billboard 200 in 2012, and Where the Light Goes followed in 2023.
