Hyper-futurist K-pop — metallic drops, AI-avatar lore, and immaculate execution, with 'Next Level' and 'Supernova' proving experimental concepts can still conquer charts.

aespa's name combines the English initials for avatar and experience with the word aspect, reflecting its concept of members meeting virtual counterparts, or ae, and the fictional world built around their releases. The group debuted on November 17, 2020, with 'Black Mamba', a video that drew the highest 24-hour view count of any K-pop group's debut clip.

'Next Level' followed in 2021, reaching number two on South Korea's Circle Digital Chart and winning Song of the Year at the Korean Music Awards. The group's first EP, Savage, released that October, became the highest-charting debut album by a K-pop girl group on the Billboard 200 at number twenty.

Their second EP, Girls, arrived in July 2022 and broke the sales record for a K-pop girl group, becoming the first to sell a million copies in its first week and reaching number three on the Billboard 200. My World followed in May 2023, selling more than two million copies and giving the group a second top-ten placement on that chart.

aespa released their debut studio album, Armageddon, in May 2024, led by the single 'Supernova', which spent eleven weeks atop the Circle Digital Chart and won Song of the Year at both the MAMA and Melon Music Awards. 'Whiplash' gave the group its first top-ten entry on the Billboard Global 200 later that year, and 'Dirty Work' reached the chart's top five in 2025.
