Carl Craig
Second-wave Detroit techno architect whose productions still sound like they were made next year — a catalog that treats techno as jazz's rightful heir.
Carl Craig is a producer and DJ from Detroit, born in 1969, and one of the central figures of the city's second wave of techno. He came up under the wing of Derrick May and began releasing in the early 1990s, working under a string of aliases including 69, Paperclip People, BFC and Innerzone Orchestra, the last of which produced the much-sampled "Bug in the Bassbin".
His music tends to be melodic and harmonically restless, with an audible debt to jazz and to Detroit's older musical traditions, and his remixes are treated as compositions in their own right. He founded the Planet E Communications label, and he served as artistic director of the first Detroit Electronic Music Festival. Later projects have set his catalogue against live orchestral and ensemble arrangements.
