Clap Your Hands Say Yeah
The blog-era success story, now essentially Alec Ounsworth solo, and that distinctive warble is undimmed — self-released indie history still touring on its own terms.
Clap Your Hands Say Yeah began in Brooklyn in 2004 as a band led by singer and guitarist Alec Ounsworth. Their self-released debut album circulated through early music blogs and became one of the defining examples of an act building an audience online without a label, a story frequently cited in accounts of that period.
The music combines jangling, propulsive indie rock with Ounsworth's nasal, quavering voice, a delivery that drew comparisons to David Byrne and Neutral Milk Hotel's Jeff Mangum. Since the original lineup dissolved, Ounsworth has continued the project largely on his own, writing and recording new albums and touring with backing musicians.
