The voice that made dubstep and UK funky sound like radio pop — 'Katy on a Mission' is still the definitive pirate-radio-to-Top-5 crossover.
Katy B is the singer Kathleen Brien, born in Peckham, south London, and a graduate of the BRIT School. She came up through the city's pirate radio and club circuit, recording with producers connected to the Rinse FM stable — among them Geeneus, Zinc and Benga — and released her music through Rinse's own label in partnership with Columbia.
Her debut album, On a Mission, appeared in 2011 and was shortlisted for that year's Mercury Prize, pairing her clear, unfussy vocal with dubstep, UK funky and house rhythms rather than conventional pop production. Singles including "Lights On", with Ms Dynamite, and "Broken Record" followed. The 2014 album Little Red topped the UK chart and produced "Crying for No Reason", a comparatively stripped-back ballad, and she has continued to appear as a guest vocalist on dance records.
