La Dispute
Narrative post-hardcore delivered closer to recitation than singing, and devastating for it — short stories screamed at full band volume.
La Dispute formed in Grand Rapids, Michigan in 2004, built around vocalist Jordan Dreyer's writing, which sits closer to prose or poetry than conventional lyrics. Dreyer half-speaks and half-screams through pieces that often follow characters and situations across a whole record, with the band shifting between quiet passages and sudden hardcore intensity behind him.
Their albums tend to be conceived as complete works rather than song collections, taking on subjects such as grief, illness, and the histories attached to particular houses and streets. The group is frequently grouped with the post-hardcore and screamo revival of the late 2000s, though its spoken-word approach set it apart from most peers.
