Mike D is Michael Diamond, a founding member of the Beastie Boys, the New York group that began as a hardcore punk band in the early 1980s before turning to hip-hop and going on to record Licensed to Ill, Paul's Boutique, Check Your Head and Ill Communication. He played drums in the band's early incarnation and was one of its three rappers throughout, and co-founded the Grand Royal label and magazine.

Since the Beastie Boys ended following Adam Yauch's death in 2012, Diamond has worked on production and radio projects and appears as a DJ, playing sets that draw on the funk, punk, disco and rap records that fed the group's own sampling habits.
