Subhumans formed in the Warminster and Trowbridge area of Wiltshire in 1980, with Dick Lucas on vocals. They emerged from the British anarcho-punk scene alongside bands like Crass and Flux of Pink Indians, though their playing was looser and more varied, drawing on reggae, ska and faster hardcore tempos as much as straight punk.
Their early releases, including the album The Day the Country Died and a series of EPs, remain the best-known part of the catalogue. Lucas went on to front Culture Shock and Citizen Fish, and Subhumans have reformed and toured periodically since, with the lyrics still built around anti-authoritarian politics delivered at speed and often with a dry wit.
