West Country punk that kept mutating between anarcho, psychobilly, and straight-up rock — Devon eccentrics who never fit the uniform.

Cult Maniax formed in 1978 around Lyme Regis on the Dorset–Devon border, part of the loose West Country punk scene that also produced bands in nearby Warminster and Yeovil. They released a run of singles and EPs on small independent labels through the early 1980s, and their line-up and sound shifted repeatedly across those records, moving between the political edge of the era's anarcho-punk, rockabilly and psychobilly rhythms, and plainer garage rock. That restlessness kept them at a slight angle to both the anarcho circuit and the emerging UK82 bands. The group has reappeared periodically since, playing the older material live.
