SUNN O))) were formed in 1998 by Greg Anderson and Stephen O'Malley, initially as an extension of their admiration for Earth's early drone work, and named after the Sunn amplifier brand. Their music consists largely of extended, slowly shifting guitar drones played at extreme volume, with little in the way of drums or conventional song structure.
Records including Black One, Monoliths & Dimensions and Life Metal, most issued through Anderson's Southern Lord label, have brought in orchestral and choral elements alongside the guitars, and Hungarian vocalist Attila Csihar has appeared regularly. They have collaborated with Boris on Altar and with Scott Walker on Soused. Live, the pair perform in hooded robes amid heavy fog.
