The Suicide Machines formed in Detroit in 1991 and became one of the more durable American bands to combine ska with hardcore punk. Jason Navarro's vocals sit over a rhythm section that shifts between upstroke ska passages and much faster punk tempos, often within the same song.
Their material has consistently carried explicit political content, addressing labour, policing and inequality, alongside more straightforwardly melodic tracks. The band signed to a major label in the 1990s, broke up in the mid-2000s, and later reconvened to tour and record again.
