U2
Four Dubliners who have been playing together since school, built on The Edge's delay-soaked guitar and Bono's arms-wide delivery. Stadium scale since the mid-eighties.
U2 formed in 1976 after drummer Larry Mullen Jr. put a notice on a board at Mount Temple Comprehensive School in Dublin. Bono, The Edge and Adam Clayton answered, and the line-up has not changed. The Edge's echo and delay settings became the band's signature, heard on "I Will Follow" and across "The Unforgettable Fire".
"The Joshua Tree" in 1987 made them one of the largest touring acts in the world, and "Achtung Baby" followed in 1991 with distorted guitars and the ironic stagecraft of the Zoo TV tour. Bono has spent decades on debt relief and AIDS campaigning, work that has drawn both support and criticism.
