Barão Vermelho
The band that gave Brazilian rock its poetry in the 1980s, with Cazuza and Frejat's songbook still near the centre of the canon.
Barão Vermelho formed in Rio de Janeiro in the early 1980s with Cazuza singing and Roberto Frejat on guitar, alongside Maurício Barros, Dé Palmeira and Guto Goffi. Their songs carried a directness that set them apart from the rest of the era's Brazilian rock: "Bete Balanço", "Pro Dia Nascer Feliz", "Maior Abandonado".
Cazuza left in 1985 for a solo career and died in 1990; Frejat moved to lead vocals and the band kept working into the 1990s. A version of the group returned at the end of the 2010s, with Goffi and Barros from the original line-up and Rodrigo Suricato singing.
