Demi Lovato was born in Albuquerque and raised in Texas, beginning as a child actor on Barney & Friends before moving to the Disney Channel, where roles in Camp Rock and Sonny with a Chance led to a recording contract. The early albums leaned on pop-rock; later records shifted toward mainstream pop and dance-pop, producing hits including "Skyscraper," "Heart Attack," "Cool for the Summer" and "Sorry Not Sorry."

Lovato has been unusually public about mental health, addiction and recovery, both in interviews and in documentary work, and that material has fed directly into the songwriting. More recent releases have returned to guitars and a harder rock edge, including re-recorded rock versions of earlier songs. The voice is the constant — a large, belted instrument that most of the arrangements are built to showcase.
