Elton John was born Reginald Dwight in Pinner, north-west London, in 1947, and trained at the Royal Academy of Music before turning to pop. His enduring partnership with lyricist Bernie Taupin, begun in the late 1960s, produced "Your Song," "Tiny Dancer," "Rocket Man," "Bennie and the Jets," "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road" and dozens more, most of them built around his gospel- and boogie-inflected piano playing.
His 1970s run made him one of the biggest-selling artists in the world, and he has since written for the stage and screen, including the songs for Disney's The Lion King. Live, he remains a piano-and-band performer, with a fondness for elaborate costume that dates back to his earliest arena shows.
