Black Eyed Peas
The pop-rap machine behind 'Where Is the Love?' and 'I Gotta Feeling', built for stadium singalongs and still touring hard.
Black Eyed Peas trace back to 1988, when will.i.am and apl.de.ap met at the all-ages LA venue Club What? and formed the dance crew Tribal Nation. Eazy-E signed an early version of the group, then called Atban Klann, to Ruthless Records. Reconfigured with Taboo, they signed to Interscope and released two albums of live-band hip-hop, Behind the Front and Bridging the Gap, before shifting toward a more pop-oriented sound.
Fergie joined in 2003 for Elephunk, whose single 'Where Is the Love?' topped the charts in thirteen countries and spent seven weeks at number one in the UK, becoming that year's biggest-selling single there. Monkey Business followed in 2005, reaching number two on the Billboard 200 and going triple platinum.
The E.N.D. (2009) topped the Billboard 200 and produced three US number-one singles, 'Imma Be', 'Boom Boom Pow' and 'I Gotta Feeling', the latter two holding the top two Hot 100 spots simultaneously for a then-record twenty-six weeks. 'I Gotta Feeling' also became the first single to sell over a million downloads in the UK, and the group won three Grammy Awards from six nominations.
The Beginning (2010) added the top-five hits 'The Time (Dirty Bit)' and 'Just Can't Get Enough', and the group played the Super Bowl XLV halftime show in February 2011 before announcing an indefinite hiatus, briefly reuniting in 2015.
Fergie left after the group's long hiatus, and J. Rey Soul has sung with them since 2018, appearing on Masters of the Sun Vol. 1 that year, an album that failed to chart. Recent records lean on reggaeton and Latin pop, including 'Ritmo' and 'Girl Like Me' with Shakira. Across their career the group has sold an estimated 80 million records, and their sets remain built around the singles, with will.i.am handling most of the between-song talking.
