Basement

1 festival played

British '90s-worship emo — thick guitars, buried vocals, and a hold over a very specific generation that treats every appearance as an event.

Basement formed in Ipswich in 2009 and released their first records through Run for Cover, the American label that helped connect them to a wider emo and punk audience. The band paused activity in 2012 before returning a couple of years later, and later releases came via Fueled by Ramen.

Their sound leans on 1990s alternative rock and post-hardcore: heavy, distorted guitar chords, mid-tempo rhythms and Andrew Fisher's vocals set back in the mix, often closer to a shout than a melody line. The songs are built around big, simple hooks, and the combination of grunge-scale guitar tone with emo phrasing is what most listeners identify them by.
