Border-raised songwriter refusing to pick a genre — punk, rap, and shoegaze inside a single track, stitched together with pop instincts.

Jean Dawson was born David Sanders in San Diego on December 22, 1995, to an African-American father from Long Beach and a Mexican mother from Sinaloa, who learned English partly by listening to West Coast hip-hop. He grew up between Tijuana and Spring Valley, California, crossing the border daily for school, and has described himself in those years as a loner who spent lunches in the library.

His songs move between distorted guitars, rap cadences, hazy melodic passages and pop structure, frequently within the same track, and he tends to resist being placed in any one scene. Critics and interviewers have tried out labels including alternative, pop, rock and hip-hop for him, though experimental pop is the tag that recurs most often.

He moved to Los Angeles to study film at California State University, Los Angeles, and used his book money to buy studio equipment, eventually dropping out. He recorded his debut, Bad Sports, in his dorm room with roommate Lecx Stacy before releasing it through his own label, P+, which has since put out all of his albums and singles.

He self-released early material before the albums Pixel Bath and CHAOS NOW*, which drew attention for their restless production and for collaborations with artists from outside his immediate genre. He spent 2021 and 2022 supporting Brockhampton on tour, released "Ghost" through Apple Music's Juneteenth-themed Freedom Songs series, and his live shows lean toward the punk end of his catalogue.
