The voice of Portishead, whose solo work leaves trip-hop behind for stark folk and orchestral arrangement — one of British music's most singular singers.
Beth Gibbons is an English singer best known as the vocalist of Portishead, the Bristol group she formed with Geoff Barrow and Adrian Utley. Their 1994 debut, Dummy, won the Mercury Prize and became one of the defining records of British trip-hop, largely because of Gibbons' voice: close-miked, wavering, drawing on torch singing and blues phrasing over sampled and live instrumentation.
Her work away from the band has taken several different shapes. Out of Season, made with Paul Webb under the name Rustin Man, set her singing against acoustic and folk-leaning arrangements, and in 2019 she recorded Henryk Górecki's Symphony No. 3 with the Polish National Radio Symphony Orchestra, singing in Polish. Lives Outgrown, released in 2024, was her first album issued under her own name alone, built from sparse, largely acoustic settings and songs about ageing and loss.
