CKY

1 upcoming festival

Pennsylvania hard rock band bound up with the skate-video world that broke them — sludgy riffs, deadpan menace and '96 Quite Bitter Beings' still doing the heavy lifting.

CKY formed in West Chester, Pennsylvania, built around guitarist Chad I Ginsburg, drummer Jess Margera and singer-guitarist Deron Miller. The name comes from Camp Kill Yourself, the skate and stunt video series made by Jess's brother Bam Margera, and the band's songs were used heavily in those tapes and in the television and film work that followed, which carried the music to an audience well beyond its local scene.

Their sound leans on downtuned, mid-paced riffs and thick grooves, with Ginsburg's layered guitar work and a flat, sardonic vocal delivery. Volume 1 appeared in 1999, followed by further albums including Infiltrate•Destroy•Rebuild, An Answer Can Be Found and Carver City. Miller later left the group, after which Ginsburg took over lead vocals alongside Margera.
