Thirty years of blunt-force positivity — Jamey Jasta shouting self-reliance over riffs engineered to move a room sideways, hardcore's most dependable motivational speaker.

Hatebreed formed in 1994 in Bridgeport, Connecticut, later based out of New Haven, with founding members Jamey Jasta, Chris Beattie on bass, Dave Russo on drums, and guitarists Larry Dwyer Jr. and Wayne Lozinak. Early recordings included a locally sold demo and a split 7-inch with Neglect, followed by the self-released EP Under the Knife and a tour supporting UK hardcore band Voorhees.

Their 1997 debut, Satisfaction Is the Death of Desire, came out on Victory Records and sold around 158,000 copies, making it the label's best-selling debut and a record still regarded as a genre touchstone. The band toured the Warped Tour the following year as its lineup kept turning over.

Jasta and Beattie remained the constants through repeated personnel changes; drummer Matt Byrne joined in 2001, the same year the band made its first Ozzfest appearance. Hatebreed signed to Universal Records for 2002's Perseverance, which reached the Billboard 200.

The single "Live for This" earned a Grammy nomination for Best Hardcore Performance in 2005. The band kept recording through to 2020's Weight of the False Self, while Jasta built a separate career in broadcasting and other bands, all without changing Hatebreed's fast, loud, crowd-driven live approach.
