Moodymann
Detroit's most idiosyncratic house producer — soul and funk samples left gloriously raw, played from behind sunglasses and mystique.
Moodymann is Kenny Dixon Jr., a producer and DJ from Detroit who has run his own KDJ and Mahogani Music labels since the 1990s. His records sit apart from most house music of the period: long, loose tracks built from raw soul, disco and funk samples, with vinyl crackle, spoken fragments and party chatter left in rather than cleaned away.
Tracks such as "Dem Young Sconies" and "I Can't Kick This Feeling When It Hits" are among his best known, and the 1997 album Silentintroduction remains a touchstone. He has long guarded his privacy, giving few interviews and often performing behind sunglasses, and his DJ sets range well beyond house into soul, jazz and hip hop.
