The Copyrights formed in Carbondale, Illinois, in 2002, and have spent their career working in the Ramones-descended, Midwestern strain of pop-punk associated with labels such as Red Scare and It's Alive. Their songs are short and fast, with distorted downstroked guitars, group backing vocals and melodies that stay close to the surface.

Across a run of albums the band has kept the formula largely unchanged, favouring consistency over reinvention. They are frequently mentioned alongside peers in the same scene, and members have also been involved in related side projects.
