Nerf Herder formed in Santa Barbara County, California, in 1994, and built a catalogue of short, fast pop-punk songs steeped in references to comics, science fiction and suburban failure. Their debut included "Van Halen," a wry tribute to hair-metal fandom that became their best-known song, and the band's self-deprecating humour has remained central to the material since.
Guitarist and singer Parry Gripp has been the constant through the group's lineup changes. Nerf Herder also recorded the theme music for the television series Buffy the Vampire Slayer, which introduced them to an audience well outside punk circles. Live, the band leans on brisk tempos, big vocal hooks and between-song joking.
