The Impossibles
Austin's beloved late-'90s pop-punk/ska outfit, all sugar-rush hooks and horns — a nostalgia hit that still detonates live.
The Impossibles formed in Austin, Texas in 1994, built around the songwriting of Rory Phillips and Gabe Hascall. Their early material leaned on ska-punk conventions — upstroke guitars, horn lines, quick tempos — but over the course of their run the horns receded and the songs moved toward straight-ahead melodic pop-punk, with layered harmonies and hooks that owed as much to power pop as to hardcore.
The band broke up around the turn of the millennium, and members went on to other projects, but The Impossibles have reconvened periodically since, playing to audiences who came to the records in their original run and to a later generation who found them second-hand.
