The Summer Set
Arizona pop-rock that split up, reunited, and came back noticeably better — second acts done right.
The Summer Set formed in Scottsdale, Arizona, in 2007. Brian Dales came together with brothers John and Stephen Gomez and drummer Jess Bowen, who had previously played together in a band called Last Call for Camden. Guitarist Josh Montgomery joined the following year, completing the lineup that carried the band through its first decade.
Their music sits between pop-punk and straightforward pop-rock, built on hooks, keyboards and layered production rather than aggression. The band self-released an early EP, Love the Love You Have, before signing to The Militia Group in 2008 and issuing a follow-up EP that sharpened the sound that would define their debut album.
The Summer Set moved through several labels over the years, Razor & Tie from 2009 to 2011 and then Fearless Records from 2012 to 2017. Their album run includes Love Like This (2009), Everything's Fine (2011), Legendary (2013) and Stories for Monday (2016), followed years later, after the band's return, by Meet Me At The Record Store.
The band toured extensively in the early 2010s, sharing bills with acts including The Cab, We Are the In Crowd, Mayday Parade, Sleeping with Sirens and All Time Low, and became associated with the Warped Tour generation of American pop-rock bands. Dales also wrote the song 'Chelsea' for actress Chelsea Kane, who danced to it on Dancing with the Stars.
The Summer Set announced a breakup in October 2017. The hiatus lasted until August 2021, when the members regrouped to record and perform again, eventually returning to release new material after the reunion.
