The Wrecks
Big-chorus indie-rock built for a room singing back — Nick Anderson's phrasing does a lot of the work, and the crowd does the rest.
The Wrecks began with an online friendship: Nick Anderson met Aaron Kelley on Facebook around 2010, and the pair later played together in the pop-punk band Coastbound before deciding to try something different. In 2015, working out of Thousand Oaks, California, Anderson, the band's vocalist and songwriter, recruited Billy Nally and Nick Schmidt, both New Jersey natives who drove across the country to record with them, rounding out the line-up that became The Wrecks.
Using a home studio Anderson had gained access to through a friend's housekeeping job, the band recorded three songs in three days with engineer Andrew D'Angelo, releasing them as the EP We Are the Wrecks in April 2016. That year they opened shows for Nothing But Thieves, and in December signed to Another Century Records, setting up their first taste of national attention.
Their debut single, 'Favorite Liar,' picked up heavy alternative radio play and reached the top forty on that chart. It passed five million Spotify streams within its first year and, by 2025, had climbed past fifty million, giving the still new band a genuine hit before their first full-length album arrived.
Anderson writes and produces much of the band's material himself. The songs are guitar-driven and pop-leaning, with conversational verses that open into large, repeated choruses, and lyrics that tend toward relationships and self-deprecation. His vocal delivery, clipped, rhythmic, occasionally spoken, is a defining feature, and the arrangements are built with live audiences in mind.
Their following grew sharply after the 2020 debut album Infinitely Ordinary and its single 'Fvck Somebody.' The band is now built around Anderson alongside Nick Schmidt, Aaron Kelley and Billy Nally, still centered on the same guitar-and-chorus formula they worked out in that borrowed home studio.
