Phantom Planet formed in Los Angeles in 1994 while its members were still in their teens; actor Jason Schwartzman played drums in the early lineup, and Alex Greenwald has been the band's singer throughout. Their 2002 album The Guest yielded "California," which became widely known as the theme to the television series The O.C.

The rest of the catalogue is less tidy than that association suggests, moving from polished power pop toward rougher, more angular rock on subsequent releases. The band went on hiatus at the end of the 2000s before reuniting some years later.
