Tops are an indie pop band from Montreal, fronted by singer Jane Penny alongside guitarist David Carriere. Formed in the early 2010s, they emerged from the same Montreal scene as a number of other bands working outside the city's better-known noise and punk circles.
Their sound draws on soft rock and pop production of the late 1970s and early 1980s: clean guitar lines, unhurried tempos, warm keyboards and Penny's light, conversational vocals. The songs are generally short and melodic, with arrangements kept deliberately uncluttered.
