Godsmack
Sully Erna's New England hard rock institution, built on percussion-heavy grooves and drum duels — arena-scale riffs since the late '90s.
Godsmack formed in Massachusetts in 1995 around singer and guitarist Sully Erna, and became one of the more commercially reliable American hard rock bands of the following decades. Their sound is built on downtuned, mid-tempo riffs, chanted choruses and a strong emphasis on rhythm, with early material often grouped alongside the nu metal and post-grunge acts of the late 1990s.
Erna, who began as a drummer, has long incorporated extended drum duels with the band's drummer into live sets, and the group has also recorded quieter acoustic material alongside its heavier work. Songs including "Whatever," "Awake" and "I Stand Alone" remain fixtures of the catalogue.
