half•alive is a trio from Long Beach, California, formed in 2016 by vocalist Josh Taylor, bassist J Tyler Johnson and drummer Brett Kramer. Their music combines indie pop songwriting with funk and R&B rhythm playing, leaning heavily on bass lines and syncopation rather than guitar.
The band broke through with "still feel." in 2018, whose video featured the choreographed group dancing that has since become part of their identity. Their debut album, Now, Not Yet, followed in 2019, and they have continued to release records that pair elaborate visual concepts with the same rhythmic approach. Their live shows incorporate the choreography rather than treating it as a novelty.
