Sonic Youth's icon in her uncompromising solo era — trap-damaged noise and total cool, more experimental now than most bands ever manage.

Kim Gordon spent roughly three decades as bassist, guitarist and one of the vocalists in Sonic Youth, the New York band that carried no wave and noise-rock ideas into a broader alternative audience. She has also worked as a visual artist and writer, publishing the memoir Girl in a Band.

Since Sonic Youth ended she has recorded as Body/Head with Bill Nace and released solo albums, including No Home Record and The Collective, both made with producer Justin Raisen. That solo material moves away from guitar-band structures towards distorted electronic production and heavy programmed low end, with Gordon's flat, deadpan delivery set against it. Her live performances retain the abrasive guitar textures associated with her earlier work.
