Kim Gordon
Sonic Youth's icon in her uncompromising solo era — trap-damaged noise and total cool, more experimental now than most bands ever manage.
Kim Gordon was born in Rochester, New York, in 1953 and grew up in Los Angeles, where her father was a professor at UCLA. She studied at Otis College of Art and Design before moving to New York City to work in the art world, and there she formed Sonic Youth with Thurston Moore in 1981; the two married in 1984.
Kim Gordon spent roughly three decades as bassist, guitarist and one of the vocalists in Sonic Youth, the New York band that carried no wave and noise-rock ideas into a broader alternative audience. The band released six albums on independent labels before moving to DGC Records for Goo in 1990. Eight more albums followed, the last of them, The Eternal, appearing on Matador Records in 2009. Sonic Youth disbanded in 2011 after Gordon and Moore separated.
She has also worked as a visual artist throughout her career, with record producing, fashion and acting alongside the music: she produced Hole's debut album Pretty on the Inside, founded the clothing line X-Girl, and appeared in films including Last Days and I'm Not There. In 2015 she published the memoir Girl in a Band.
After Sonic Youth ended, Gordon formed the experimental duo Body/Head with Bill Nace, releasing Coming Apart in 2013 and The Switch in 2018, and later worked with Alex Knost as Glitterbust. Her solo albums, No Home Record and The Collective, were both made with producer Justin Raisen; The Collective, released in 2024, earned her first two Grammy nominations.
That solo material moves away from guitar-band structures towards distorted electronic production and heavy programmed low end, with Gordon's flat, deadpan delivery set against it. Her live performances retain the abrasive guitar textures associated with her earlier work, closer to the noise of Sonic Youth than to the records' programmed surfaces.
