Technicolor rave nostalgia — breakbeats bathed in VHS sunshine, hardcore's golden era remembered warmer than it ever actually sounded.

Lone is the recording name of Matt Cutler, a producer from Nottingham who first worked as one half of the electronic duo Kids in Tracksuits with Andy Hemsley. When that group split he began releasing music as Lone, starting with the self-issued CD-R Everything is Changing Colour in 2007.

His work draws on early-1990s British rave and hardcore, breakbeats, pitched-up vocal samples, rolling basslines, filtered through bright, hazy synth textures closer to instrumental hip-hop and house. Cutler has named Boards of Canada and Madlib as central influences, alongside the producer Keaver & Brause and Bibio.

Cutler has released records through labels including Magic Wire, Werkdiscs and R&S. Earlier albums such as Lemurian and Ecstasy & Friends leaned toward beat-tape abstraction, while Emerald Fantasy Tracks and Galaxy Garden moved further into club tempos while keeping the same saturated, melodic palette, alongside a run of EPs including Cluster Dreams and Echolocations.

Alongside his solo output, Cutler also records as part of Kona Triangle, a duo formed with Keaver & Brause, another producer he cites as an influence. The project released an album titled Sing a New Sapling into Existence, its artwork produced by the illustrator HAPPY DAZE.

His music has reached beyond electronic circles: Azealia Banks has sampled several Lone tracks and used two of his productions on her debut album Broke with Expensive Taste, and Coldplay worked elements of his song 'Blue Moon Tree' into a live remix of 'Midnight'. He also performs DJ sets alongside live material.
