The 'Drone Logic' architect live — strobe-lit techno with a shoegaze heart, walls of texture that blur the line between club and gig.

Daniel Avery is an English electronic producer and DJ who came up through the London club scene before releasing his debut album, Drone Logic, on Erol Alkan's Phantasy Sound in 2013. The record set out his approach: repetition and slowly shifting layers of noise rather than conventional song structures.

His work pulls from acid house and techno on one side and the textural pull of shoegaze and ambient music on the other. Later albums pushed further into ambient and drone territory, and he has collaborated with Nine Inch Nails' Alessandro Cortini along the way.

Avery now records for Domino, and his latest album, Tremor, moves through shoegaze, submerged techno, ambient soundscape and industrial textures across its run. It expands on the atmospheres of his earlier records, built from the same palette of synthesis and repetition but arranged over a larger scale.

In a live setting he performs with hardware rather than DJing, building long, loud passages of distorted synthesis and machine rhythm. The results blur the line between a club set and a live gig, with the emphasis on sustained volume and slow transformation rather than mixed tracks.
