Maisie Peters
Diary-entry pop with a novelist's detail — the 'Good Witch' faithful sing every word, British wit sharpening every heartbreak.
Maisie Peters was born on 28 May 2000 in Steyning, West Sussex, to a geography teacher, Nick, and a communications worker, Diane. She has a twin sister, Ellen, who inspired her song "Brooklyn." She began singing in choirs around age eight, wrote her first song at nine, and started writing regularly at twelve after borrowing a friend's guitar for a school project.
At Steyning Grammar School she won the 2015 talent show with her own composition "Electric" and performed with the Ariel Company Theatre. By fifteen she was busking around Brighton and posting original songs to YouTube, which led to her first recorded performance on The Ayala Show in 2016.
Her independently released singles "Place We Were Made" and "Birthday" caught the attention of BBC Introducing, which named the former its song of the week in early 2018. She signed to Atlantic Records UK that year, releasing two EPs before writing songs for the second series of Trying, with guest vocals from James Bay, Griff and Bear's Den.
In 2020 she contributed the song "Smile" to the Birds of Prey soundtrack and was announced as the opening act for Niall Horan's European tour dates, which were later cancelled due to the pandemic. She also started an online book club on Instagram around the same time.
She signed to Ed Sheeran's Gingerbread Man Records in 2021 and released her debut album, You Signed Up for This, that August; it debuted at number two on the UK Albums Chart and was the best-selling record in the country's independent record stores that week, led by the singles "John Hughes Movie" and "Psycho." The Good Witch, released in 2023, made her the youngest solo British female artist in almost a decade to top that chart, and a third album, Florescence, followed in 2026.
