Styx formed in Chicago in the early 1970s and became one of the most commercially successful American rock bands of that decade, combining progressive rock arrangements with hard rock and radio-oriented songwriting. Keyboards, layered vocal harmonies and theatrical structure are central to the sound.
The band's best-known songs include "Come Sail Away," "Renegade," "Lady" and "Babe," drawn from a run of albums that included the concept-driven Kilroy Was Here. Dennis DeYoung, Tommy Shaw and James Young were the principal voices of the classic era; Shaw and Young continue to lead the group, which has toured steadily for decades.
